The Swargarohini Expedition is one of the most rewarding and challenging high-altitude climbing adventures in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Standing at an impressive altitude of 6,252 meters (20,510 feet), Swargarohini is a revered peak with great spiritual and historical significance. Known as the “Gateway to Heaven” in local folklore, this majestic peak offers an exciting challenge for mountaineers. It is part of the Swargarohini Range, and the summit offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Bandarpunch, Black Peak (Kalanag), and the Gangotri Glacier. The expedition to Swargarohini is a mix of technical climbing, glacier navigation, and high-altitude trekking, making it ideal for experienced climbers seeking a Himalayan adventure that combines both beauty and challenge.
Arrive in Dehradun and meet your expedition team. After briefing and preparation, begin your scenic drive to Sankri, a charming village located in the Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the Yamuna River and the surrounding foothills of the Himalayas. On arrival in Sankri, check in at a guesthouse or camp for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, start your trek to Seema Village, located at the base of the Swargarohini massif. The trek involves a gradual ascent through dense oak and pine forests. Along the way, enjoy views of the towering peaks and valleys. Seema Village is peaceful and provides the perfect spot to camp for the night.
On this day, continue your trek to Taluka, a beautiful meadow located closer to the foot of the Swargarohini Range. The trail takes you through alpine meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Once in Taluka, set up camp and relax for the night.
These two days will be dedicated to further acclimatization and preparation for the summit push. You will trek to Base Camp, located at around 4,500 meters, which is situated near the Swargarohini Glacier. The terrain is rough and includes rocky moraine fields, glacial streams, and boulder-strewn paths. Upon arrival at Base Camp, mountaineering training will begin, including glacier travel and techniques for ice climbing.
After acclimatizing at Base Camp, begin your ascent to Camp 1. The climb is steep and involves navigating rocky and icy sections. Technical mountaineering skills, including the use of crampons and ice axes, will be essential. The ascent will be physically demanding, but the views of Swargarohini’s twin summits and surrounding peaks are absolutely breathtaking. Once at Camp 1, spend the night preparing for the higher camp.
Continue your climb from Camp 1 to Camp 2, which will be set at a higher altitude. This section involves more technical climbing, with a combination of ice, snow, and rock climbing. The air will be thinner at these higher altitudes, making the climb even more challenging. Camp 2 is a crucial staging point for the final summit attempt.
The summit push starts early in the morning to take advantage of the cool temperatures and minimize the risk of avalanches. The final ascent to the summit involves climbing steep snow and ice slopes and negotiating rocky outcrops. The route demands advanced mountaineering skills. Reaching the summit of Swargarohini is a true triumph, with panoramic views of the Bandarpunch, Black Peak, Kalanag, and Gangotri Glacier visible in the distance. Spend a brief time at the summit to take photos and soak in the majestic surroundings before beginning the descent to Camp 2.
After the successful summit, begin the descent from Camp 2 to Base Camp and then down to Taluka. The descent is quicker but requires careful attention to avoid injury, especially on icy or rocky sections. Once in Taluka, take a well-deserved rest and enjoy the scenic beauty of the region.
On the final day, trek from Taluka back to Sankri, where the trek concludes. From Sankri, take a drive back to Dehradun. On arrival in Dehradun, reflect on the incredible journey and the successful summit of Swargarohini, marking the end of the expedition.
