Overview

Nestled amidst the lofty Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 4,329 meters (14,200 ft), Hemkund Sahib is one of the most revered Sikh pilgrimage sites in India. A high-altitude glacial lake flanked by snow-covered peaks and a pristine gurudwara on its banks, Hemkund Sahib is a soul-stirring destination that combines devotion, adventure, and the serenity of nature.

Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this spiritual yatra, trekking through lush green forests, cascading waterfalls, and steep rocky trails to bow their heads at the divine abode of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, who is believed to have meditated here in a previous life.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Govindghat

Govindghat, located about 275 km from Rishikesh, is the base for the Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers treks. The journey to Govindghat offers stunning views of the Alaknanda River and the majestic Himalayan ranges. Overnight stay in a hotel or guesthouse.

Day 2: Govindghat to Ghangaria (13 km Trek)

Start early from Govindghat. You can either walk or hire a pony or porter for the 13 km trek to Ghangaria, a small settlement nestled in the valley that serves as a base for Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers. The trail runs alongside the Pushpawati River and winds through dense forests and quaint bridges.

  • Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

  • Altitude: 3,050 m

  • Overnight stay: Hotels/lodges available

Day 3: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib and back (6 km one way)

This is the most spiritually and physically challenging day of the journey. Begin the steep 6 km climb to Hemkund Sahib early in the morning. The path is paved with stone and gradually opens up to reveal the majestic lake and Gurudwara. Amid the alpine beauty, the sound of “Waheguru” chants echoing through the valley adds to the transcendental experience.

After spending some peaceful moments at the shrine and taking the sacred dip in the icy-cold waters of the Hemkund Lake, trek back to Ghangaria by late afternoon.

  • Trek Duration: 7–8 hours (round trip)
